How aluminium roller shutters work, and what to ask for

Roll-formed aluminium laths are two skins of aluminium with an insulating foam core, which keeps them light. Aluminium is the usual choice for domestic shutters and garage roller doors.

Aluminium does not rust, so it suits coastal towns and exposed frontages. Aluminium curtains roll up tighter than steel, so the shutter box can often be smaller.

Options we can specify

  • Manual or electric operation
  • Smaller shutter box than steel
  • Quieter running than steel
  • Roll-formed foam-filled or extruded aluminium laths
  • No rust, suited to coastal and exposed sites
  • Powder coated to a RAL colour

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Questions about aluminium roller shutters in Ilkeston

Do you cover Ilkeston?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair aluminium roller shutters in Ilkeston and the DE7 district, as part of our coverage across Derbyshire.

Will an aluminium shutter dent?

Foam-filled laths can dent under a heavy impact. Extruded aluminium resists denting far better, and damaged laths can be replaced individually.

Do aluminium shutters corrode by the sea?

Aluminium does not rust like steel, and a powder-coated finish adds protection, which makes it a good choice for coastal frontages.

What is the difference between roll-formed and extruded aluminium?

Roll-formed laths are two thin skins with a foam core, which is light and insulating. Extruded laths are solid profiles, which are heavier and much stronger.

Do your guide prices include VAT?

Guide prices are shown both excluding VAT and including VAT at the standard rate of 20%. For a home, the price including VAT is what you pay.

What warranty do I get?

Products carry the manufacturer's warranty, and the warranty for your shutter is set out in your quote.
