Fire shutters
Fire-resisting roller shutters that close automatically on a fire signal to hold back fire.
A fire shutter is a fire-resisting roller shutter that stays open in normal use and closes automatically when the fire alarm or a fusible link triggers it. It keeps fire from spreading through an opening in a fire-resisting wall, for a tested period such as 60, 120 or 240 minutes.

How fire shutters work
Fire shutters are tested as complete assemblies, and their fire resistance is quoted in minutes for integrity and, where needed, insulation. They are usually linked to the fire alarm, and many also have a fusible link that releases the curtain in heat. Fail-safe or gravity-closing designs let the curtain descend even if the power fails during a fire. The rating has to match the fire strategy for the wall the shutter sits in, which is set by the building's fire design.
Fire shutters are common in kitchens, serveries, plant rooms, warehouses and openings between compartments. Because they are part of the building's fire precautions, they must be maintained and tested regularly. A fire shutter that sticks or closes too slowly may not protect the opening, which is why drop tests matter.
Product certification and test evidence come from the manufacturer, and we provide the documentation with the shutter. Counter-height fire shutters protect serving hatches and kitchen pass-throughs. Escape routes and the effect of the shutter closing are checked against the fire strategy before ordering.
Options we can specify

|---|---|
| Activation | Fire alarm interface, fusible link, manual release |
| Closing | Fail-safe / gravity closing with governed speed |
| Evidence | Manufacturer's test and certification documents with handover |
| Maintenance | Regular drop testing and servicing as part of fire precautions |

Fire safety law and fire shutters
England
In England fire shutters form part of a building's fire precautions under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The responsible person must keep them maintained in efficient working order and good repair, which in practice means regular drop testing with written records.
Wales
In Wales the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 also applies. Fire shutters are part of the fire precautions, and the responsible person must keep them maintained in efficient working order, with regular drop testing and records.
Scotland
In Scotland the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 require the duty holder to keep fire safety measures, including fire shutters, maintained in efficient working order and good repair.
Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 require the appropriate person to keep fire precautions, including fire shutters, maintained in efficient working order.
Safety of powered shutters
Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.
Electrical work
England
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.
Wales
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in Wales, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations as applied in Wales, so the work is self-certified by a registered electrician or notified to building control.
Scotland
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In Scotland electrical work in buildings must also meet the Scottish building standards, and is carried out and certified by a qualified electrician.
Northern Ireland
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, by a qualified electrician. Northern Ireland has its own building regulations, and any building control requirement for the work is confirmed with your council.

Fire shutters: common questions
How often should a fire shutter be tested?
Fire shutters are part of a building's fire precautions, so they must be kept in working order. Manufacturers and industry guidance typically call for a drop test and service at least once a year, and more often where they are used heavily.
What rating do I need?
The rating must match the fire-resisting wall the shutter is in, which is set by the building's fire strategy or fire risk assessment. We work from that, or from your fire engineer's specification.
Will a fire shutter close in a power cut?
Fire shutters are designed to close on loss of power or on a fire signal, usually by gravity with a governed speed, so they fail safe.
Do you certify fire shutters?
The fire rating belongs to the manufacturer's tested product. We supply certified shutters with their documentation and install them to the manufacturer's instructions.
Is the survey free?
Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.
Are your prices fixed?
Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.
