Insulated roller shutters
Double-skin foam-filled shutters that cut heat loss and noise through large openings.
An insulated roller shutter has double-skin laths filled with insulating foam, so the closed curtain holds heat in and keeps noise out better than single-skin metal. They are used on heated warehouses, workshops, garages and cold stores where the opening would otherwise lose heat.

How insulated roller shutters work
Double-skin laths sandwich a foam core between two metal skins, which slows heat transfer through the curtain. A large opening loses a lot of heat, so insulating the door can make a noticeable difference to a heated unit. Insulated laths also deaden sound, which helps workshops near homes and units with noisy processes. Brush and rubber seals at the guides, head and bottom rail cut draughts around the curtain.
Insulated curtains are heavier than single-skin aluminium, so the motor and barrel are sized to suit. They can be made in steel or aluminium, and powder coated to match cladding. Insulated shutters reduce condensation on the inside of the door in cold weather.
Vision laths can be included so staff can see outside without opening the door. Insulated doors are often paired with a high-speed door inside for busy loading bays. Thermal performance figures are quoted per product by the manufacturer, and we pass them on with your quote.

Rules that apply
What the law and planning system expect, by nation. We check these at survey.
Safety of powered shutters
Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.
Electrical work
England
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.
Wales
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in Wales, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations as applied in Wales, so the work is self-certified by a registered electrician or notified to building control.
Scotland
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In Scotland electrical work in buildings must also meet the Scottish building standards, and is carried out and certified by a qualified electrician.
Northern Ireland
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, by a qualified electrician. Northern Ireland has its own building regulations, and any building control requirement for the work is confirmed with your council.

Insulated roller shutters: common questions
How much heat does an insulated shutter save?
It depends on the door size, how often it is open and how the building is heated. The manufacturer's thermal figures show the difference between insulated and single-skin curtains, and we include them with your quote.
Are insulated shutters more secure?
The double skin adds some strength, but insulation is about heat and noise. For tested security, look at steel or LPS 1175 rated shutters.
Can you insulate my existing shutter?
Not usually. Insulation is built into the laths, so the curtain would need replacing, which is often possible on the existing box and guides.
Do insulated shutters need a bigger box?
Yes, slightly, because the thicker laths make a larger roll. We measure the space above the opening at survey.
Is the survey free?
Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.
Are your prices fixed?
Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.
