High-speed doors

Fast-acting fabric doors for busy internal and external openings in factories and warehouses.

A high-speed door is a fast-acting door with a flexible PVC fabric curtain that opens and closes in seconds. It is used on busy openings in factories, warehouses and food sites to keep heat, dust and draughts out between frequent forklift and pedestrian movements.

How high-speed doors work

High-speed doors open and close much faster than roller shutters, so the opening spends less time open. The fabric curtain can be pushed out of its guides by an impact and re-inserted automatically on many models, reducing damage. Vision strips in the curtain let drivers and pedestrians see what is on the other side. Radar, induction loops and pull cords open the door automatically as traffic approaches.

Light curtains in the frame stop the curtain closing if anything is in the opening. High-speed doors are often fitted inside an insulated roller shutter, which provides security out of hours. Food, pharmaceutical and cold-store sites use them to keep zones separate.

They are designed for very high numbers of cycles a day, which a standard roller shutter is not. Insulated and cold-store versions are available for temperature-controlled areas. Regular servicing keeps the sensors and safety devices working correctly on such a busy door.

Rules that apply

What the law and planning system expect, by nation. We check these at survey.

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Electrical work

England

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

Wales

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in Wales, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations as applied in Wales, so the work is self-certified by a registered electrician or notified to building control.

Scotland

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In Scotland electrical work in buildings must also meet the Scottish building standards, and is carried out and certified by a qualified electrician.

Northern Ireland

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, by a qualified electrician. Northern Ireland has its own building regulations, and any building control requirement for the work is confirmed with your council.

High-speed doors: common questions

Is a high-speed door secure?

Not on its own. The fabric curtain is for traffic and environmental control, so it is often paired with a roller shutter that closes out of hours.

What happens if a forklift hits the curtain?

On many models the curtain pops out of its guides and re-feeds itself on the next cycle, which avoids the damage a steel shutter would suffer.

How fast do they open?

High-speed doors open in a few seconds, much faster than a roller shutter. The exact speed depends on the model and size.

Do high-speed doors save energy?

They reduce the time an opening stands open, which cuts heat loss and draughts on busy doors.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.

Are your prices fixed?

Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.
