Home security shutters

External roller shutters for house windows, patio and bi-fold doors.

Home security shutters are compact aluminium roller shutters fitted to the windows and doors of a house. They close over the glazing to deter break-ins, block light for better sleep, and add a layer of insulation, and are usually electric with a switch or remote.

How home security shutters work

Domestic shutters use slim double-skin aluminium laths filled with foam, which keeps them light and quiet. The box can sit on the face of the wall, inside the window reveal, or be built in during an extension or new build. Closed shutters add a layer of insulation and can block nearly all daylight, which helps bedrooms and media rooms. Electric operation with a wall switch, remote or timer makes it easy to close every shutter in the house at once.

Patio and bi-fold doors can be covered by a single wide shutter, protecting the largest area of glass. Colours are chosen to match the window frames, with anthracite grey and white the most common choices. Fire escape routes matter: shutters on escape windows need an easy manual override or battery backup so they can be opened quickly.

Whether planning permission is needed depends on the property, the council and any listing or conservation area. Shutters protect glazing from storm debris and reduce noise from busy roads. Smart controllers can link shutters to timers so the house looks occupied while you are away.

Rules that apply

What the law and planning system expect, by nation. We check these at survey.

Shutters on a house: planning

England

For houses in England some small external changes fall under permitted development, but flats and maisonettes do not have the same rights, and listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 directions restrict changes to a property's appearance. If any of these apply, check with your council before ordering.

Wales

In Wales permitted development rules for houses are set by the Welsh Government. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas need more care, so check with your council before ordering if any of these apply.

Scotland

In Scotland permitted development rules for houses are set by the Scottish Government. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas restrict external changes, so check with your council before ordering if any of these apply.

Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland permitted development rules for houses are set by the Department for Infrastructure. Listed buildings and conservation areas restrict external changes, so check with your council before ordering if either applies.

Electrical work

England

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

Wales

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in Wales, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations as applied in Wales, so the work is self-certified by a registered electrician or notified to building control.

Scotland

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In Scotland electrical work in buildings must also meet the Scottish building standards, and is carried out and certified by a qualified electrician.

Northern Ireland

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, by a qualified electrician. Northern Ireland has its own building regulations, and any building control requirement for the work is confirmed with your council.

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Home security shutters: common questions

Do I need planning permission for shutters on my house?

It depends on the property. Houses in England often have permitted development rights for minor changes, but flats do not, and listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 areas add restrictions. Rules differ in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We flag it at survey; your council has the final say.

Will shutters stop me escaping in a fire?

They must not. Shutters on bedroom or escape windows are fitted with a manual override or battery backup so they can be opened quickly, and we discuss escape routes at survey.

Do home shutters help with heating bills?

Closed shutters add an insulating layer over the glass and reduce draughts, which helps keep heat in at night. The effect depends on the windows you already have.

Can shutters be added to an existing window?

Yes. Most domestic shutters are retrofitted with a box on the face of the wall or in the reveal, so the window does not need to be replaced.

How noisy are electric home shutters?

Domestic tube motors are quiet, and foam-filled laths reduce rattle, so shutters can be used in bedrooms without disturbing anyone.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.

Are your prices fixed?

Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.
