Garage roller doors
Insulated aluminium roller garage doors with remote control, for homes and lock-ups.
A garage roller door is a roller shutter made for a domestic garage opening. It rolls into a box above the opening rather than swinging out, so you can park right up to it, and it usually has insulated aluminium laths and electric operation with remote fobs.

How garage roller doors work
Roller doors open straight up, so cars can park close to the door and nothing swings into the driveway. Insulated aluminium laths help garages used as workshops, gyms or utility spaces stay warmer. Remote fobs are standard on most electric garage doors, with wall switches and app control as options. Safety edges and obstacle detection stop the door on contact, which matters where children or pets are around.
A manual override lets you open the door from inside in a power cut. Roller doors can be fitted behind the opening, in the opening or on the face, depending on the space above. Up-and-over doors can usually be replaced with a roller door without changing the opening.
Colours are chosen to match front doors and windows, with anthracite, white and woodgrain finishes common. The box needs a little headroom inside the garage, which is checked at survey. Domestic garage doors are covered by the same powered door safety standard as commercial doors.

Rules that apply
What the law and planning system expect, by nation. We check these at survey.
Safety of powered shutters
Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.
Electrical work
England
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.
Wales
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in Wales, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations as applied in Wales, so the work is self-certified by a registered electrician or notified to building control.
Scotland
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In Scotland electrical work in buildings must also meet the Scottish building standards, and is carried out and certified by a qualified electrician.
Northern Ireland
Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, by a qualified electrician. Northern Ireland has its own building regulations, and any building control requirement for the work is confirmed with your council.
Shutters on a house: planning
England
For houses in England some small external changes fall under permitted development, but flats and maisonettes do not have the same rights, and listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 directions restrict changes to a property's appearance. If any of these apply, check with your council before ordering.
Wales
In Wales permitted development rules for houses are set by the Welsh Government. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas need more care, so check with your council before ordering if any of these apply.
Scotland
In Scotland permitted development rules for houses are set by the Scottish Government. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas restrict external changes, so check with your council before ordering if any of these apply.
Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland permitted development rules for houses are set by the Department for Infrastructure. Listed buildings and conservation areas restrict external changes, so check with your council before ordering if either applies.

Garage roller doors: common questions
Can a roller door replace my up-and-over door?
Yes, usually without changing the opening. We check the headroom and side space at survey to choose the right fixing position.
How much headroom does a roller garage door need?
The box needs some space above the opening inside or outside the garage. Exact clearance depends on the door height and curtain, so we measure it at survey.
Are roller garage doors insulated?
Most are, with foam-filled aluminium laths. They are not as thermally efficient as a wall, but they make a real difference to a garage used as a workspace.
What safety features do garage roller doors have?
Electric doors should stop and reverse on contact, using a safety edge or obstacle detection, and have a manual override for power cuts.
Is the survey free?
Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.
Are your prices fixed?
Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.
