How aluminium roller shutters work, and what to ask for

Aluminium does not rust, so it suits coastal towns and exposed frontages. Extruded aluminium laths are solid profiles that are stronger and more resistant to forced entry than roll-formed laths.

A lighter curtain puts less strain on the motor, springs and barrel, which helps the shutter last. Foam-filled laths reduce noise and add a little insulation compared with single-skin metal.

Features to choose from

  • Powder coated to a RAL colour
  • Roll-formed foam-filled or extruded aluminium laths
  • Quieter running than steel
  • Manual or electric operation
  • Lighter curtain for less wear on motors and springs
  • Smaller shutter box than steel

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Aluminium roller shutters: common questions

Do you cover New Malden?

Yes. New Malden (KT3) is within our Greater London coverage, along with nearby Surbiton, Morden and Wimbledon.

Do aluminium shutters corrode by the sea?

Aluminium does not rust like steel, and a powder-coated finish adds protection, which makes it a good choice for coastal frontages.

Is aluminium strong enough for a shop?

For most shops and offices, yes, especially extruded aluminium laths. For high-risk premises, galvanised steel or a rated shutter may be recommended.

Will an aluminium shutter dent?

Foam-filled laths can dent under a heavy impact. Extruded aluminium resists denting far better, and damaged laths can be replaced individually.

Are your prices fixed?

Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Photos and approximate sizes let us give you a guide price quickly. A survey is still needed before a shutter is made, because it is built to exact measurements.
