How aluminium roller shutters work, and what to ask for

Aluminium curtains roll up tighter than steel, so the shutter box can often be smaller. Aluminium is the usual choice for domestic shutters and garage roller doors.

Aluminium does not rust, so it suits coastal towns and exposed frontages. Aluminium laths take powder coating well, so they can be finished in almost any RAL colour.

Options we can specify

  • Solid, perforated or vision laths
  • No rust, suited to coastal and exposed sites
  • Smaller shutter box than steel
  • Lighter curtain for less wear on motors and springs
  • Roll-formed foam-filled or extruded aluminium laths
  • Manual or electric operation

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Questions about aluminium roller shutters in Westminster

Do you cover Westminster?

Yes. Westminster (SW1) is within our Greater London coverage, along with nearby Pimlico, Chelsea and Battersea.

Will an aluminium shutter dent?

Foam-filled laths can dent under a heavy impact. Extruded aluminium resists denting far better, and damaged laths can be replaced individually.

Do aluminium shutters corrode by the sea?

Aluminium does not rust like steel, and a powder-coated finish adds protection, which makes it a good choice for coastal frontages.

What is the difference between roll-formed and extruded aluminium?

Roll-formed laths are two thin skins with a foam core, which is light and insulating. Extruded laths are solid profiles, which are heavier and much stronger.

What warranty do I get?

Products carry the manufacturer's warranty, and the warranty for your shutter is set out in your quote.

Will you take away my old shutter?

Yes. Removal and disposal of an old shutter is included when we quote for a replacement.
