How aluminium roller shutters work, and what to ask for

Aluminium is the usual choice for domestic shutters and garage roller doors. Roll-formed aluminium laths are two skins of aluminium with an insulating foam core, which keeps them light.

Perforated aluminium laths are available for frontages where the display needs to stay visible. Foam-filled laths reduce noise and add a little insulation compared with single-skin metal.

Features to choose from

  • Roll-formed foam-filled or extruded aluminium laths
  • No rust, suited to coastal and exposed sites
  • Lighter curtain for less wear on motors and springs

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

How it works

  1. Send the details

Give us the postcode, approximate width and height, and what the shutter is protecting.

  2. We survey the opening

An engineer measures and checks the fixings, power and any planning constraints.

  3. You approve a fixed price

The quote lists the specification and price in writing, so there are no surprises.

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Before you book in Hereford

Do you cover Hereford?

Yes. Hereford (HR1) is within our Herefordshire coverage, along with nearby Ross-on-Wye, Leominster and Malvern.

What is the difference between roll-formed and extruded aluminium?

Roll-formed laths are two thin skins with a foam core, which is light and insulating. Extruded laths are solid profiles, which are heavier and much stronger.

Do aluminium shutters corrode by the sea?

Aluminium does not rust like steel, and a powder-coated finish adds protection, which makes it a good choice for coastal frontages.

Will an aluminium shutter dent?

Foam-filled laths can dent under a heavy impact. Extruded aluminium resists denting far better, and damaged laths can be replaced individually.

Who carries out the work?

Work is carried out by experienced shutter engineers working for S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, which is the company your contract is with.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.
