How aluminium roller shutters work, and what to ask for

Aluminium does not rust, so it suits coastal towns and exposed frontages. Aluminium laths take powder coating well, so they can be finished in almost any RAL colour.

Aluminium curtains roll up tighter than steel, so the shutter box can often be smaller. A lighter curtain puts less strain on the motor, springs and barrel, which helps the shutter last.

Rules in England

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

Before you book in Berkhamsted

Do you cover Berkhamsted?

Yes. Send the postcode and we will arrange a survey in Berkhamsted. We also cover nearby Chesham, Hemel Hempstead and Amersham.

Do aluminium shutters corrode by the sea?

Aluminium does not rust like steel, and a powder-coated finish adds protection, which makes it a good choice for coastal frontages.

Is aluminium strong enough for a shop?

For most shops and offices, yes, especially extruded aluminium laths. For high-risk premises, galvanised steel or a rated shutter may be recommended.

What is the difference between roll-formed and extruded aluminium?

Roll-formed laths are two thin skins with a foam core, which is light and insulating. Extruded laths are solid profiles, which are heavier and much stronger.

How long does it take from order to fitting?

Shutters are made to measure after the survey, so the lead time depends on the product, colour and any security rating. We confirm it in your quote.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Photos and approximate sizes let us give you a guide price quickly. A survey is still needed before a shutter is made, because it is built to exact measurements.
