How aluminium roller shutters work, and what to ask for

Extruded aluminium laths are solid profiles that are stronger and more resistant to forced entry than roll-formed laths. For higher-risk sites, extruded aluminium or galvanised steel is usually preferred to foam-filled laths.

A lighter curtain puts less strain on the motor, springs and barrel, which helps the shutter last. Aluminium curtains roll up tighter than steel, so the shutter box can often be smaller.

Features to choose from

  • Roll-formed foam-filled or extruded aluminium laths
  • Smaller shutter box than steel
  • No rust, suited to coastal and exposed sites
  • Solid, perforated or vision laths

  • Lighter curtain for less wear on motors and springs

Rules in England

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

Aluminium roller shutters: common questions

Do you cover Preston?

Yes. Preston (PR1) is within our Lancashire coverage, along with nearby Leyland, Chorley and Blackburn.

What is the difference between roll-formed and extruded aluminium?

Roll-formed laths are two thin skins with a foam core, which is light and insulating. Extruded laths are solid profiles, which are heavier and much stronger.

Will an aluminium shutter dent?

Foam-filled laths can dent under a heavy impact. Extruded aluminium resists denting far better, and damaged laths can be replaced individually.

Is aluminium strong enough for a shop?

For most shops and offices, yes, especially extruded aluminium laths. For high-risk premises, galvanised steel or a rated shutter may be recommended.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Photos and approximate sizes let us give you a guide price quickly. A survey is still needed before a shutter is made, because it is built to exact measurements.

Do you work with landlords and managing agents?

Yes. We quote, fit and service shutters for landlords, managing agents and facilities teams, including multi-site planned maintenance.
