How aluminium roller shutters work, and what to ask for

Aluminium laths take powder coating well, so they can be finished in almost any RAL colour. Aluminium curtains roll up tighter than steel, so the shutter box can often be smaller.

Roll-formed aluminium laths are two skins of aluminium with an insulating foam core, which keeps them light. Perforated aluminium laths are available for frontages where the display needs to stay visible.

What's included

  • Lighter curtain for less wear on motors and springs
  • Powder coated to a RAL colour
  • Solid, perforated or vision laths
  • Quieter running than steel
  • Manual or electric operation
  • No rust, suited to coastal and exposed sites

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Questions about aluminium roller shutters in Caterham

Do you cover Caterham?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair aluminium roller shutters in Caterham and the CR3 district, as part of our coverage across Surrey.

Will an aluminium shutter dent?

Foam-filled laths can dent under a heavy impact. Extruded aluminium resists denting far better, and damaged laths can be replaced individually.

Do aluminium shutters corrode by the sea?

Aluminium does not rust like steel, and a powder-coated finish adds protection, which makes it a good choice for coastal frontages.

Is aluminium strong enough for a shop?

For most shops and offices, yes, especially extruded aluminium laths. For high-risk premises, galvanised steel or a rated shutter may be recommended.

Are your prices fixed?

Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.

Can you fit outside trading hours?

Yes, out-of-hours fitting can be arranged for shops and businesses that cannot close during the day.
