How aluminium roller shutters work, and what to ask for

Aluminium is the usual choice for domestic shutters and garage roller doors. For higher-risk sites, extruded aluminium or galvanised steel is usually preferred to foam-filled laths. Perforated aluminium laths are available for frontages where the display needs to stay visible.

Extruded aluminium laths are solid profiles that are stronger and more resistant to forced entry than roll-formed laths. Foam-filled laths reduce noise and add a little insulation compared with single-skin metal.

Options we can specify

  • Powder coated to a RAL colour
  • No rust, suited to coastal and exposed sites
  • Solid, perforated or vision laths
  • Smaller shutter box than steel
  • Lighter curtain for less wear on motors and springs
  • Quieter running than steel

Covering Tyne and Wear

We cover Tyne and Wear from Newcastle upon Tyne to Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead, with 12 towns listed below. Planning decisions for external shutters sit with your local council in England, and we check the position at survey.

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

Aluminium roller shutters: common questions

Is aluminium strong enough for a shop?

For most shops and offices, yes, especially extruded aluminium laths. For high-risk premises, galvanised steel or a rated shutter may be recommended.

Do aluminium shutters corrode by the sea?

Aluminium does not rust like steel, and a powder-coated finish adds protection, which makes it a good choice for coastal frontages.

Will an aluminium shutter dent?

Foam-filled laths can dent under a heavy impact. Extruded aluminium resists denting far better, and damaged laths can be replaced individually.

Will you take away my old shutter?

Yes. Removal and disposal of an old shutter is included when we quote for a replacement.

Can you fit outside trading hours?

Yes, out-of-hours fitting can be arranged for shops and businesses that cannot close during the day.
