Electric roller shutters in Accrington: the essentials

Smart controllers can add app or timer control to many existing motors without replacing the shutter. A tubular motor sits inside the barrel on most shop and domestic shutters, while larger doors use a direct-drive or chain motor on the end plate.

A manual override, usually a crank or a release cord, means the shutter can still be opened in a power cut. Powered shutters are treated as machinery, so they are commissioned with a risk assessment and safety checks rather than simply wired in.

Specification options

  • Powder coating to a RAL colour
  • Soft start and stop to reduce wear
  • Key switch, wall switch, remote fob or timer control
  • Manual override for power cuts
  • Optional app or smart-home control
  • Aluminium, steel, perforated or insulated curtains

Accrington sits in Lancashire, roughly 14 miles from Preston. Whether the job is in the BB5 district or nearby Rawtenstall, Blackburn and Darwen, the survey and quote work the same way.

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

How it works

  1. Send the details

  2. We survey the opening

An engineer measures and checks the fixings, power and any planning constraints.

  3. You approve a fixed price

The quote lists the specification and price in writing, so there are no surprises.

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Your questions answered

Do you cover Accrington?

Yes. Send the postcode and we will arrange a survey in Accrington. We also cover nearby Rawtenstall, Blackburn and Darwen.

Are safety edges always needed?

Not always. It depends on the risk assessment: who uses the opening, whether people or vehicles pass under it, and how the shutter is controlled. Hold-to-run key switches on a shopfront often need less than an automatic industrial door.

Do I need a new electrical circuit?

Usually not. Most shutters run from a fused spur near the shutter box. If there is no supply nearby, a new circuit is quoted separately and done by a qualified electrician.

How long do shutter motors last?

With regular servicing a good tube motor typically lasts many years. Heavy daily use, an overweight curtain or misaligned guides shorten its life, which is why servicing matters.

Do your guide prices include VAT?

Guide prices are shown both excluding VAT and including VAT at the standard rate of 20%. For a home, the price including VAT is what you pay.

What warranty do I get?

Products carry the manufacturer's warranty, and the warranty for your shutter is set out in your quote.
