How fire shutters work, and what to ask for

Product certification and test evidence come from the manufacturer, and we provide the documentation with the shutter. Fire shutters are common in kitchens, serveries, plant rooms, warehouses and openings between compartments.

Escape routes and the effect of the shutter closing are checked against the fire strategy before ordering. Fire shutters are tested as complete assemblies, and their fire resistance is quoted in minutes for integrity and, where needed, insulation.

Features to choose from

  • Alarm-linked closing with fusible link backup
  • Fire resistance from 60 to 240 minutes, product dependent
  • Governed closing speed for safety
  • Fail-safe or gravity closing on power loss
  • Planned servicing to keep it compliant
  • Manufacturer's test evidence and certification

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Before you book in Catford

Do you cover Catford?

Yes. Send the postcode and we will arrange a survey in Catford. We also cover nearby Blackheath, Greenwich and Beckenham.

How often should a fire shutter be tested?

Fire shutters are part of a building's fire precautions, so they must be kept in working order. Manufacturers and industry guidance typically call for a drop test and service at least once a year, and more often where they are used heavily.

What rating do I need?

The rating must match the fire-resisting wall the shutter is in, which is set by the building's fire strategy or fire risk assessment. We work from that, or from your fire engineer's specification.

Do you certify fire shutters?

The fire rating belongs to the manufacturer's tested product. We supply certified shutters with their documentation and install them to the manufacturer's instructions.

Do your guide prices include VAT?

Guide prices are shown both excluding VAT and including VAT at the standard rate of 20%. For a home, the price including VAT is what you pay.

Do you repair shutters fitted by other companies?

Yes. We repair and service most makes of roller shutter, grille and industrial door, whoever fitted them.
