How fire shutters work, and what to ask for

Fail-safe or gravity-closing designs let the curtain descend even if the power fails during a fire. Fire shutters are tested as complete assemblies, and their fire resistance is quoted in minutes for integrity and, where needed, insulation.

Fire shutters are common in kitchens, serveries, plant rooms, warehouses and openings between compartments. Counter-height fire shutters protect serving hatches and kitchen pass-throughs.

Options we can specify

  • Planned servicing to keep it compliant
  • Commissioning and drop test on handover
  • Fire resistance from 60 to 240 minutes, product dependent
  • Counter, hatch and large-opening versions
  • Governed closing speed for safety
  • Alarm-linked closing with fusible link backup

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

How it works

  1. Send the details

Give us the postcode, approximate width and height, and what the shutter is protecting.

  2. We survey the opening

An engineer measures and checks the fixings, power and any planning constraints.

  3. You approve a fixed price

The quote lists the specification and price in writing, so there are no surprises.

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Questions about fire shutters in Sevenoaks

Do you cover Sevenoaks?

Yes. Sevenoaks (TN13) is within our Kent coverage, along with nearby Tonbridge, Swanley and Tunbridge Wells.

Do you certify fire shutters?

The fire rating belongs to the manufacturer's tested product. We supply certified shutters with their documentation and install them to the manufacturer's instructions.

What rating do I need?

The rating must match the fire-resisting wall the shutter is in, which is set by the building's fire strategy or fire risk assessment. We work from that, or from your fire engineer's specification.

How often should a fire shutter be tested?

Fire shutters are part of a building's fire precautions, so they must be kept in working order. Manufacturers and industry guidance typically call for a drop test and service at least once a year, and more often where they are used heavily.

How long does it take from order to fitting?

Shutters are made to measure after the survey, so the lead time depends on the product, colour and any security rating. We confirm it in your quote.

Do your guide prices include VAT?

Guide prices are shown both excluding VAT and including VAT at the standard rate of 20%. For a home, the price including VAT is what you pay.
