How garage roller doors work, and what to ask for

Roller doors can be fitted behind the opening, in the opening or on the face, depending on the space above. Domestic garage doors are covered by the same powered door safety standard as commercial doors.

Up-and-over doors can usually be replaced with a roller door without changing the opening. Insulated aluminium laths help garages used as workshops, gyms or utility spaces stay warmer.

Options we can specify

  • Fitted behind, in or on the face of the opening
  • Replaces up-and-over doors

Rules in England

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

How it works

  1. Send the details

Give us the postcode, approximate width and height, and what the shutter is protecting.

  2. We survey the opening

An engineer measures and checks the fixings, power and any planning constraints.

  3. You approve a fixed price

The quote lists the specification and price in writing, so there are no surprises.

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Your questions answered

Do you cover Stevenage?

Yes. Stevenage (SG1) is within our Hertfordshire coverage, along with nearby Hitchin, Letchworth Garden City and Welwyn Garden City.

How much headroom does a roller garage door need?

The box needs some space above the opening inside or outside the garage. Exact clearance depends on the door height and curtain, so we measure it at survey.

What safety features do garage roller doors have?

Electric doors should stop and reverse on contact, using a safety edge or obstacle detection, and have a manual override for power cuts.

Are roller garage doors insulated?

Most are, with foam-filled aluminium laths. They are not as thermally efficient as a wall, but they make a real difference to a garage used as a workspace.

Do you repair shutters fitted by other companies?

Yes. We repair and service most makes of roller shutter, grille and industrial door, whoever fitted them.

Do you work with landlords and managing agents?

Yes. We quote, fit and service shutters for landlords, managing agents and facilities teams, including multi-site planned maintenance.
