How high-speed doors work, and what to ask for

Light curtains in the frame stop the curtain closing if anything is in the opening. The fabric curtain can be pushed out of its guides by an impact and re-inserted automatically on many models, reducing damage. They are designed for very high numbers of cycles a day, which a standard roller shutter is not.

High-speed doors open and close much faster than roller shutters, so the opening spends less time open. Vision strips in the curtain let drivers and pedestrians see what is on the other side.

Features to choose from

  • Light curtain safety protection
  • Internal, external and cold-store versions
  • Self-repairing curtain on many models
  • High daily cycle rating
  • Radar, loop, pull-cord and push-button activation
  • Fast-acting PVC fabric curtain

Covering Devon

We cover Devon from Plymouth to Exeter, Paignton and Torquay, with 9 towns listed below. Planning decisions for external shutters sit with your local council in England, and we check the position at survey.

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

Your questions answered

What happens if a forklift hits the curtain?

On many models the curtain pops out of its guides and re-feeds itself on the next cycle, which avoids the damage a steel shutter would suffer.

How fast do they open?

High-speed doors open in a few seconds, much faster than a roller shutter. The exact speed depends on the model and size.

Do high-speed doors save energy?

They reduce the time an opening stands open, which cuts heat loss and draughts on busy doors.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Photos and approximate sizes let us give you a guide price quickly. A survey is still needed before a shutter is made, because it is built to exact measurements.
