How high-speed doors work, and what to ask for

They are designed for very high numbers of cycles a day, which a standard roller shutter is not. High-speed doors open and close much faster than roller shutters, so the opening spends less time open. Light curtains in the frame stop the curtain closing if anything is in the opening.

Insulated and cold-store versions are available for temperature-controlled areas. Food, pharmaceutical and cold-store sites use them to keep zones separate.

Options we can specify

  • Light curtain safety protection
  • Radar, loop, pull-cord and push-button activation
  • Pairs with a roller shutter for security
  • Fast-acting PVC fabric curtain
  • High daily cycle rating
  • Self-repairing curtain on many models

Rules in Scotland

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In Scotland electrical work in buildings must also meet the Scottish building standards, and is carried out and certified by a qualified electrician.

Before you book in Edinburgh & the Lothians

How fast do they open?

High-speed doors open in a few seconds, much faster than a roller shutter. The exact speed depends on the model and size.

Do high-speed doors save energy?

They reduce the time an opening stands open, which cuts heat loss and draughts on busy doors.

What happens if a forklift hits the curtain?

On many models the curtain pops out of its guides and re-feeds itself on the next cycle, which avoids the damage a steel shutter would suffer.

Do your guide prices include VAT?

Guide prices are shown both excluding VAT and including VAT at the standard rate of 20%. For a home, the price including VAT is what you pay.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.
