What to know about high-speed doors in Newcastle upon Tyne

Regular servicing keeps the sensors and safety devices working correctly on such a busy door. High-speed doors are often fitted inside an insulated roller shutter, which provides security out of hours.

High-speed doors open and close much faster than roller shutters, so the opening spends less time open. Radar, induction loops and pull cords open the door automatically as traffic approaches.

Specification options

  • Self-repairing curtain on many models
  • High daily cycle rating
  • Vision strips for safe traffic flow
  • Light curtain safety protection
  • Internal, external and cold-store versions
  • Pairs with a roller shutter for security

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the opening

Send the postcode, a rough size and a photo if you have one, using the form or a call.

  2. Free survey

We measure, check the structure, power supply and planning position, and talk through options.

  3. Written fixed price

You get a written quote with the product, finish, controls and price before anything is ordered.

The shutter is made to measure, fitted, commissioned and handed over with its documents.

Before you book in Newcastle upon Tyne

Do you cover Newcastle upon Tyne?

Yes. Newcastle upon Tyne (NE1) is within our Tyne and Wear coverage, along with nearby Gateshead, Wallsend and Hebburn.

How fast do they open?

High-speed doors open in a few seconds, much faster than a roller shutter. The exact speed depends on the model and size.

Is a high-speed door secure?

Not on its own. The fabric curtain is for traffic and environmental control, so it is often paired with a roller shutter that closes out of hours.

What happens if a forklift hits the curtain?

On many models the curtain pops out of its guides and re-feeds itself on the next cycle, which avoids the damage a steel shutter would suffer.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.

Do your guide prices include VAT?

Guide prices are shown both excluding VAT and including VAT at the standard rate of 20%. For a home, the price including VAT is what you pay.
