How home security shutters work, and what to ask for
Domestic shutters use slim double-skin aluminium laths filled with foam, which keeps them light and quiet. Electric operation with a wall switch, remote or timer makes it easy to close every shutter in the house at once.
Patio and bi-fold doors can be covered by a single wide shutter, protecting the largest area of glass. Closed shutters add a layer of insulation and can block nearly all daylight, which helps bedrooms and media rooms.

- Patio and bi-fold door shutters
- Colours matched to window frames

Rules in England
Safety of powered shutters
Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Before you book in Bracknell
Do you cover Bracknell?
Yes. We survey, fit and repair home security shutters in Bracknell and the RG12 district, as part of our coverage across Berkshire.
Can shutters be added to an existing window?
Yes. Most domestic shutters are retrofitted with a box on the face of the wall or in the reveal, so the window does not need to be replaced.
Do I need planning permission for shutters on my house?
It depends on the property. Houses in England often have permitted development rights for minor changes, but flats do not, and listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 areas add restrictions. Rules differ in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We flag it at survey; your council has the final say.
How noisy are electric home shutters?
Domestic tube motors are quiet, and foam-filled laths reduce rattle, so shutters can be used in bedrooms without disturbing anyone.
Are your prices fixed?
Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.
Who carries out the work?
Work is carried out by experienced shutter engineers working for S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, which is the company your contract is with.
