How home security shutters work, and what to ask for

Colours are chosen to match the window frames, with anthracite grey and white the most common choices. Smart controllers can link shutters to timers so the house looks occupied while you are away.

Fire escape routes matter: shutters on escape windows need an easy manual override or battery backup so they can be opened quickly. Closed shutters add a layer of insulation and can block nearly all daylight, which helps bedrooms and media rooms.

Rules in Northern Ireland

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

How it works

Send the postcode, a rough size and a photo if you have one, using the form or a call.

  2. Free survey

  3. Written fixed price

You get a written quote with the product, finish, controls and price before anything is ordered.

The shutter is made to measure, fitted, commissioned and handed over with its documents.

Home security shutters: common questions

Do you cover Downpatrick?

Yes. Downpatrick (BT30) is within our County Down coverage, along with nearby Newtownards, Lisburn and Belfast.

Can shutters be added to an existing window?

Yes. Most domestic shutters are retrofitted with a box on the face of the wall or in the reveal, so the window does not need to be replaced.

Do home shutters help with heating bills?

Closed shutters add an insulating layer over the glass and reduce draughts, which helps keep heat in at night. The effect depends on the windows you already have.

How noisy are electric home shutters?

Domestic tube motors are quiet, and foam-filled laths reduce rattle, so shutters can be used in bedrooms without disturbing anyone.

Are your prices fixed?

Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.

Will you take away my old shutter?

Yes. Removal and disposal of an old shutter is included when we quote for a replacement.
