How home security shutters work, and what to ask for

Colours are chosen to match the window frames, with anthracite grey and white the most common choices. Fire escape routes matter: shutters on escape windows need an easy manual override or battery backup so they can be opened quickly.

The box can sit on the face of the wall, inside the window reveal, or be built in during an extension or new build. Closed shutters add a layer of insulation and can block nearly all daylight, which helps bedrooms and media rooms.

Specification options

  • Colours matched to window frames
  • Quiet operation suited to bedrooms
  • Face-fixed, reveal-fixed or built-in boxes
  • Manual override or battery backup on escape windows

Rules in England

Shutters on a house: planning

For houses in England some small external changes fall under permitted development, but flats and maisonettes do not have the same rights, and listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 directions restrict changes to a property's appearance. If any of these apply, check with your council before ordering.

Questions about home security shutters in Bicester

Do you cover Bicester?

Yes. Bicester (OX26) is within our Oxfordshire coverage, along with nearby Banbury, Aylesbury and Witney.

Will shutters stop me escaping in a fire?

They must not. Shutters on bedroom or escape windows are fitted with a manual override or battery backup so they can be opened quickly, and we discuss escape routes at survey.

Can shutters be added to an existing window?

Yes. Most domestic shutters are retrofitted with a box on the face of the wall or in the reveal, so the window does not need to be replaced.

How noisy are electric home shutters?

Domestic tube motors are quiet, and foam-filled laths reduce rattle, so shutters can be used in bedrooms without disturbing anyone.

Do your guide prices include VAT?

Guide prices are shown both excluding VAT and including VAT at the standard rate of 20%. For a home, the price including VAT is what you pay.

Are your prices fixed?

Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.
