How home security shutters work, and what to ask for

Shutters protect glazing from storm debris and reduce noise from busy roads. Colours are chosen to match the window frames, with anthracite grey and white the most common choices.

Electric operation with a wall switch, remote or timer makes it easy to close every shutter in the house at once. The box can sit on the face of the wall, inside the window reveal, or be built in during an extension or new build.

Options we can specify

  • Patio and bi-fold door shutters
  • Slim foam-filled aluminium laths
  • Quiet operation suited to bedrooms
  • Wall switch, remote, timer or app control
  • Blackout and added insulation when closed
  • Colours matched to window frames

Rules in Scotland

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

How it works

  2. We survey the opening

  3. You approve a fixed price

Home security shutters: common questions

Do you cover Galashiels?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair home security shutters in Galashiels and the TD1 district, as part of our coverage across Scottish Borders.

Will shutters stop me escaping in a fire?

They must not. Shutters on bedroom or escape windows are fitted with a manual override or battery backup so they can be opened quickly, and we discuss escape routes at survey.

Do I need planning permission for shutters on my house?

It depends on the property. Houses in England often have permitted development rights for minor changes, but flats do not, and listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 areas add restrictions. Rules differ in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We flag it at survey; your council has the final say.

Can shutters be added to an existing window?

Yes. Most domestic shutters are retrofitted with a box on the face of the wall or in the reveal, so the window does not need to be replaced.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Photos and approximate sizes let us give you a guide price quickly. A survey is still needed before a shutter is made, because it is built to exact measurements.

Who carries out the work?

Work is carried out by experienced shutter engineers working for S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, which is the company your contract is with.
