Choosing home security shutters for premises in West Midlands

Whether planning permission is needed depends on the property, the council and any listing or conservation area. Smart controllers can link shutters to timers so the house looks occupied while you are away. The box can sit on the face of the wall, inside the window reveal, or be built in during an extension or new build.

Domestic shutters use slim double-skin aluminium laths filled with foam, which keeps them light and quiet. Patio and bi-fold doors can be covered by a single wide shutter, protecting the largest area of glass.

Specification options

  • Quiet operation suited to bedrooms
  • Face-fixed, reveal-fixed or built-in boxes
  • Slim foam-filled aluminium laths
  • Colours matched to window frames
  • Wall switch, remote, timer or app control
  • Blackout and added insulation when closed

Covering West Midlands

We cover West Midlands from Birmingham to Coventry, Wolverhampton and Dudley, with 20 towns listed below. Planning decisions for external shutters sit with your local council in England, and we check the position at survey.

Rules in England

Shutters on a house: planning

For houses in England some small external changes fall under permitted development, but flats and maisonettes do not have the same rights, and listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 directions restrict changes to a property's appearance. If any of these apply, check with your council before ordering.

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Your questions answered

How noisy are electric home shutters?

Domestic tube motors are quiet, and foam-filled laths reduce rattle, so shutters can be used in bedrooms without disturbing anyone.

Do I need planning permission for shutters on my house?

It depends on the property. Houses in England often have permitted development rights for minor changes, but flats do not, and listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 areas add restrictions. Rules differ in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We flag it at survey; your council has the final say.

Do home shutters help with heating bills?

Closed shutters add an insulating layer over the glass and reduce draughts, which helps keep heat in at night. The effect depends on the windows you already have.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.

Can you fit outside trading hours?

Yes, out-of-hours fitting can be arranged for shops and businesses that cannot close during the day.
