How industrial roller shutter doors work, and what to ask for

Safety edges, photocells and light curtains protect people and forklifts passing under the door. Bump protection, bollards and guide-rail guards reduce damage from vehicles.

Timers, induction loops and push-button stations can be added for busy loading bays. Planned maintenance keeps busy doors running and is part of keeping workplace equipment safe.

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

How it works

  1. Send the details

Give us the postcode, approximate width and height, and what the shutter is protecting.

  2. We survey the opening

An engineer measures and checks the fixings, power and any planning constraints.

  3. You approve a fixed price

The quote lists the specification and price in writing, so there are no surprises.

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Industrial roller shutter doors: common questions

Do you cover Wickford?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair industrial roller shutter doors in Wickford and the SS12 district, as part of our coverage across Essex.

Can you fit a door with a pedestrian door in it?

Yes. Wicket doors can be built into many industrial shutters, although they need interlocks so the curtain cannot move while the wicket is open.

Can you replace just the motor on an old door?

Often yes, if the curtain and barrel are sound. See our motor replacement service.

What safety devices are required?

It depends on the risk assessment. Doors that close automatically or where people and vehicles pass usually need a safety edge, photocells or a light curtain, and force testing on commissioning.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new shutters, grilles and doors: the survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead. Repair and servicing visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we visit.

How long does it take from order to fitting?

Shutters are made to measure after the survey, so the lead time depends on the product, colour and any security rating. We confirm it in your quote.
