Choosing perforated & punched shutters for premises in Ilford

Perforated shutters can be powder coated, though very dark colours make the display behind harder to see. Perforations slightly reduce the weight of the curtain, which can help a motor or a push-up spring.

Punched laths have larger slots, giving better visibility and more airflow, at the cost of a little privacy. Window displays stay on view to passers-by, so a closed shop can still advertise what it sells.

Specification options

  • Window display visible after hours
  • Bottom-rail locks and anti-lift blocks
  • Electric or manual operation
  • Powder coating to a RAL colour
  • Ventilation through the curtain
  • Optional solid bottom section for kick protection

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

How it works

  1. Send the details

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Before you book in Ilford

Do you cover Ilford?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair perforated & punched shutters in Ilford and the IG1 district, as part of our coverage across Greater London.

Do perforated shutters let rain in?

A little water can pass through the perforations in driving rain, which is why they are normally fitted in front of glazing rather than as the only weather barrier.

Are perforated shutters easier to get planning for?

Often, because they avoid a blank frontage at night, but each council decides case by case and some refuse any external shutter in conservation areas.

Can people see into the shop?

With punched laths, yes, fairly clearly. Micro-perforated laths give a softer view that mainly shows light and shapes. We can show samples at survey.

Can you fit outside trading hours?

Yes, out-of-hours fitting can be arranged for shops and businesses that cannot close during the day.

Do your guide prices include VAT?

Guide prices are shown both excluding VAT and including VAT at the standard rate of 20%. For a home, the price including VAT is what you pay.
