What to know about roller grilles in Carshalton

Shopping centres often require roller grilles rather than solid shutters on unit fronts. Wide grilles use intermediate posts or a stronger curtain to resist being pushed in.

An open curtain lets air and light through, so displays stay on view and the unit does not look closed down. Brick-bond, tubular and link patterns give different levels of visibility and strength.

What's included

  • Aluminium or steel curtains
  • Removable intermediate posts for wide units
  • Optional polycarbonate infill
  • Suited to shopping centre unit fronts
  • Anodised or powder-coated finishes
  • Manual or electric operation

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Questions about roller grilles in Carshalton

Do you cover Carshalton?

Yes. Carshalton (SM5) is within our Greater London coverage, along with nearby Wallington, Sutton and Mitcham.

Do roller grilles need planning permission?

External roller grilles usually need planning permission like other external security. Councils often find them more acceptable than solid shutters.

Is a roller grille or a perforated shutter better?

A grille gives far more visibility and airflow, while a perforated shutter gives more privacy and weather protection. Shopping centres often specify grilles; high streets use both.

Can things be passed through a grille?

Small items can pass through an open lattice. Polycarbonate infill panels close the gaps if that is a concern.

What warranty do I get?

Products carry the manufacturer's warranty, and the warranty for your shutter is set out in your quote.

Will you take away my old shutter?

Yes. Removal and disposal of an old shutter is included when we quote for a replacement.
