What to know about roller grilles in Prestwich
Councils often see roller grilles as more acceptable than solid shutters in town centres. Shopping centres often require roller grilles rather than solid shutters on unit fronts.
Brick-bond, tubular and link patterns give different levels of visibility and strength. An open curtain lets air and light through, so displays stay on view and the unit does not look closed down.
What's included
- Brick-bond, tubular or link lattice
- Manual or electric operation
- Anodised or powder-coated finishes
- Suited to shopping centre unit fronts
- Removable intermediate posts for wide units

Rules in England
Planning permission for shopfront shutters
In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Roller grilles: common questions
Do you cover Prestwich?
Yes. Send the postcode and we will arrange a survey in Prestwich. We also cover nearby Whitefield, Radcliffe and Salford.
Can a grille cover a very wide unit?
Yes, with a stronger curtain or removable intermediate posts to keep it rigid.
Is a roller grille or a perforated shutter better?
A grille gives far more visibility and airflow, while a perforated shutter gives more privacy and weather protection. Shopping centres often specify grilles; high streets use both.
Do roller grilles need planning permission?
External roller grilles usually need planning permission like other external security. Councils often find them more acceptable than solid shutters.
Are your prices fixed?
Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.
Who carries out the work?
Work is carried out by experienced shutter engineers working for S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, which is the company your contract is with.
