Roller grilles in Stevenage: the essentials

Shopping centres often require roller grilles rather than solid shutters on unit fronts. Councils often see roller grilles as more acceptable than solid shutters in town centres.

Roller grilles roll into a box like a shutter, and can be manual or electric. An open curtain lets air and light through, so displays stay on view and the unit does not look closed down.

Options we can specify

  • Solid kick panel option
  • Brick-bond, tubular or link lattice
  • Removable intermediate posts for wide units
  • Suited to shopping centre unit fronts
  • Optional polycarbonate infill
  • Anodised or powder-coated finishes

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

How it works

  1. Send the details

Give us the postcode, approximate width and height, and what the shutter is protecting.

  2. We survey the opening

An engineer measures and checks the fixings, power and any planning constraints.

  3. You approve a fixed price

The quote lists the specification and price in writing, so there are no surprises.

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Questions about roller grilles in Stevenage

Do you cover Stevenage?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair roller grilles in Stevenage and the SG1 district, as part of our coverage across Hertfordshire.

Can a grille cover a very wide unit?

Yes, with a stronger curtain or removable intermediate posts to keep it rigid.

Is a roller grille or a perforated shutter better?

A grille gives far more visibility and airflow, while a perforated shutter gives more privacy and weather protection. Shopping centres often specify grilles; high streets use both.

Can things be passed through a grille?

Small items can pass through an open lattice. Polycarbonate infill panels close the gaps if that is a concern.

How long does it take from order to fitting?

Shutters are made to measure after the survey, so the lead time depends on the product, colour and any security rating. We confirm it in your quote.

What details help you quote quickly?

The postcode, the approximate width and height of the opening, whether you want manual or electric operation, and a photo of the frontage.
