Choosing roller grilles for premises in Burnham-on-Sea

Roller grilles roll into a box like a shutter, and can be manual or electric. Councils often see roller grilles as more acceptable than solid shutters in town centres.

Aluminium grilles are lighter and suit large unit fronts; steel grilles add strength. Wide grilles use intermediate posts or a stronger curtain to resist being pushed in.

Features to choose from

  • Suited to shopping centre unit fronts
  • Brick-bond, tubular or link lattice
  • Anodised or powder-coated finishes
  • Solid kick panel option
  • Manual or electric operation
  • Optional polycarbonate infill

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Before you book in Burnham-on-Sea

Do you cover Burnham-on-Sea?

Yes. Burnham-on-Sea (TA8) is within our Somerset coverage, along with nearby Weston-super-Mare, Bridgwater and Clevedon.

Is a roller grille or a perforated shutter better?

A grille gives far more visibility and airflow, while a perforated shutter gives more privacy and weather protection. Shopping centres often specify grilles; high streets use both.

Can things be passed through a grille?

Small items can pass through an open lattice. Polycarbonate infill panels close the gaps if that is a concern.

Can a grille cover a very wide unit?

Yes, with a stronger curtain or removable intermediate posts to keep it rigid.

Who carries out the work?

Work is carried out by experienced shutter engineers working for S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, which is the company your contract is with.

Do you work with landlords and managing agents?

Yes. We quote, fit and service shutters for landlords, managing agents and facilities teams, including multi-site planned maintenance.
