How roller grilles work, and what to ask for

Shopping centres often require roller grilles rather than solid shutters on unit fronts. Aluminium grilles are lighter and suit large unit fronts; steel grilles add strength.

An open curtain lets air and light through, so displays stay on view and the unit does not look closed down. Roller grilles roll into a box like a shutter, and can be manual or electric.

What's included

  • Aluminium or steel curtains
  • Brick-bond, tubular or link lattice
  • Anodised or powder-coated finishes
  • Optional polycarbonate infill

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

How it works

  1. Send the details

Give us the postcode, approximate width and height, and what the shutter is protecting.

  2. We survey the opening

An engineer measures and checks the fixings, power and any planning constraints.

  3. You approve a fixed price

The quote lists the specification and price in writing, so there are no surprises.

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Your questions answered

Do you cover Solihull?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair roller grilles in Solihull and the B91 district, as part of our coverage across West Midlands.

Can a grille cover a very wide unit?

Yes, with a stronger curtain or removable intermediate posts to keep it rigid.

Do roller grilles need planning permission?

External roller grilles usually need planning permission like other external security. Councils often find them more acceptable than solid shutters.

Can things be passed through a grille?

Small items can pass through an open lattice. Polycarbonate infill panels close the gaps if that is a concern.

What details help you quote quickly?

The postcode, the approximate width and height of the opening, whether you want manual or electric operation, and a photo of the frontage.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Photos and approximate sizes let us give you a guide price quickly. A survey is still needed before a shutter is made, because it is built to exact measurements.
