What to know about retractable security grilles in St Austell

Retractable grilles fold to the side of the opening, so there is no box above the window or door. Some grilles are tested to security standards such as LPS 1175 or STS 202 if a rated product is needed.

Grilles can be fitted to rear doors, stock rooms and vulnerable ground-floor windows as well as shopfronts. Grilles on escape routes need to be openable quickly from the inside, which is checked against the fire risk assessment.

Features to choose from

  • Integral locks, keyed or thumb turn
  • Rated products available on request
  • Folding lattice that stacks to the side
  • Top and bottom tracks for rigidity
  • Removable bar grilles for windows
  • Internal or external fitting

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

How it works

  1. Send the details

Give us the postcode, approximate width and height, and what the shutter is protecting.

  2. We survey the opening

An engineer measures and checks the fixings, power and any planning constraints.

  3. You approve a fixed price

The quote lists the specification and price in writing, so there are no surprises.

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Before you book in St Austell

Do you cover St Austell?

Yes. Send the postcode and we will arrange a survey in St Austell. We also cover nearby Newquay, Falmouth and Redruth.

Do grilles get in the way during the day?

Retractable grilles fold neatly to the side of the opening. Removable grilles can be lifted out and stored.

Do retractable grilles need planning permission?

Grilles fitted inside the glazing usually do not need planning permission, though listed buildings may need consent. External grilles are treated like other external security and often need permission.

Can a grille be fitted on a fire exit?

Only if it can be opened quickly from the inside without a key, and the fire risk assessment allows it. We check this before fitting.

What warranty do I get?

Products carry the manufacturer's warranty, and the warranty for your shutter is set out in your quote.

What details help you quote quickly?

The postcode, the approximate width and height of the opening, whether you want manual or electric operation, and a photo of the frontage.
