How roller shutter installation works, and what to ask for

Electric shutters are connected by a qualified electrician and commissioned with limits and safety checks. Planning permission and listed building consent are checked before the shutter is ordered.

Powered shutters are handed over with user instructions, maintenance guidance and a declaration of conformity. The shutter is made to the survey measurements, so it fits the opening rather than being adapted on site.

What's included

  • Planning checks before ordering
  • Out-of-hours fitting on request
  • Handover pack and keys
  • Survey of opening, structure and power

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.
