How shutter replacement works, and what to ask for
If the box, barrel and guides are sound, fitting a new curtain can be much cheaper than replacing everything. Like-for-like replacements on existing fixings are usually quicker to fit than new installations.
If your old shutter was manual, the replacement can be electric from the start. New electric shutters are commissioned with safety checks and handover paperwork.
Features to choose from
- Commissioning and safety checks
- Manual to electric at the same time
- Box relocation where possible
- Removal of the old shutter
- Repair and replace priced side by side
- Replacement curtain on existing box and guides

Rules in England
Planning permission for shopfront shutters
In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.
