Home security shutters: pros, cons and costs

What external roller shutters do for a house, their costs, escape safety, planning and how to choose colours and controls.

External roller shutters protect windows and patio doors when you are out or asleep, make a house harder to break into, block light for bedrooms and add a layer of insulation and noise reduction.

What are the downsides?

Shutters change the look of a house, need a box above each window, and cost more than internal blinds. Some properties face planning restrictions, and escape windows need an override so they never trap anyone in a fire.

How much do home shutters cost?

Guide prices are around £450 to £900 for a manual window shutter, £700 to £1,400 for an electric one and £900 to £1,800 for a patio door, ex VAT and fitted.

How do I choose controls and colours?

Electric shutters with a wall switch, remote or timer are the usual choice for homes. Colours are usually matched to window frames: anthracite grey and white are the most common.

  • Manual override or battery backup on escape windows
  • Group control to close every shutter at once
  • Timers so the house looks occupied
  • Colours matched to frames

Questions about this topic

Do I need planning permission?

It depends on the property and where you live. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas face more restrictions. Check with your council before ordering.

Can shutters be fitted to existing windows?

Yes, most are retrofitted with the box on the wall face or in the reveal.
