Roller shutter not working? Common faults and fixes

Why roller shutters jam, stop halfway, run noisily or will not open, what you can safely check, and when to call an engineer.

If a shutter has dropped, is hanging at an angle, has come out of its guides or makes a loud bang, stop using it and keep people clear. A failing spring or brake can let the curtain fall. Do not try to force it or take the box apart.

Why will my electric shutter not move?

Check the simple things first: the power supply, the fused spur, the key switch and the remote battery. If the motor hums but does not turn, or stops after a few seconds, it may be overheating, tripping on its limits or the safety edge may be reporting a fault.

Why does it stop halfway or reverse?

This is often the safety edge or photocells detecting an obstruction or a fault, or the limits being out of adjustment. Dirt on photocell lenses and damaged safety edge cables are common causes.

Why is my manual shutter heavy or stuck?

Heavy lifting usually means the spring in the barrel has lost tension. A shutter that sticks may have dry or dented guides, a bent bottom rail or laths out of line.

  • Curtain out of its guides after a knock or wind
  • Weak or broken spring
  • Failed motor, limit or control
  • Damaged or dented laths
  • Dry or worn guides and bearings
  • Faulty key switch or receiver

When should I call an engineer?

Call an engineer for anything beyond checking power and controls. Repairs to springs, motors and curtains need the right tools and training, and powered shutters must have their safety devices checked after work.

Questions about this topic

Can I put the curtain back in the guides myself?

We do not recommend it. The curtain may be under spring tension, and forcing it can damage the laths or cause injury.

Is a noisy shutter a problem?

Grinding or squealing usually means dry or worn parts. Servicing early is cheaper than repairing a breakdown.
