How to measure for a roller shutter

How to take rough measurements for a shutter quote, what affects the fixing position, and why a survey is still needed.

For a guide price, measure the width and height of the opening in metres or millimetres, and note where the shutter could fit. Photos of the frontage, the area above the opening and the sides help even more.

What measurements help with a quote?

  • Opening width at the narrowest point
  • Opening height from floor to underside of lintel
  • Space above the opening for the box
  • Space either side for the guides
  • Where the nearest power supply is

Where can the shutter be fixed?

Shutters can be face-fixed on the outside wall with the box above the opening, fitted between the reveals, concealed behind a fascia, or fitted inside behind the glazing. The choice affects the look, the planning position and how much of the opening is lost to the guides.

Why is a survey still needed?

Shutters are made to measure, so they are built from exact survey dimensions taken by the installer. The survey also checks the structure for fixings, the power supply, access and any planning issues, which a tape measure alone cannot tell you.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. Rules can change, so check with your council, insurer or fire risk assessor where it matters.

Questions about this topic

Do I need exact sizes for a quote?

No. Rough sizes and photos are enough for a guide price. We take exact measurements at survey.

What if there is no space above the opening?

The box can sometimes go inside or behind a fascia, or a smaller-diameter curtain can be used. We look at options at survey.
