What to know about fire shutters in Dumfries & Galloway

Escape routes and the effect of the shutter closing are checked against the fire strategy before ordering. A fire shutter that sticks or closes too slowly may not protect the opening, which is why drop tests matter. They are usually linked to the fire alarm, and many also have a fusible link that releases the curtain in heat.

Fire shutters are common in kitchens, serveries, plant rooms, warehouses and openings between compartments. Product certification and test evidence come from the manufacturer, and we provide the documentation with the shutter.

Specification options

  • Alarm-linked closing with fusible link backup
  • Planned servicing to keep it compliant
  • Fire resistance from 60 to 240 minutes, product dependent
  • Commissioning and drop test on handover
  • Manufacturer's test evidence and certification
  • Counter, hatch and large-opening versions

Rules in Scotland

Fire safety law and fire shutters

In Scotland the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 require the duty holder to keep fire safety measures, including fire shutters, maintained in efficient working order and good repair.

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In Scotland electrical work in buildings must also meet the Scottish building standards, and is carried out and certified by a qualified electrician.

Your questions answered

How often should a fire shutter be tested?

Fire shutters are part of a building's fire precautions, so they must be kept in working order. Manufacturers and industry guidance typically call for a drop test and service at least once a year, and more often where they are used heavily.

Do you certify fire shutters?

The fire rating belongs to the manufacturer's tested product. We supply certified shutters with their documentation and install them to the manufacturer's instructions.

What rating do I need?

The rating must match the fire-resisting wall the shutter is in, which is set by the building's fire strategy or fire risk assessment. We work from that, or from your fire engineer's specification.

Will you take away my old shutter?

Yes. Removal and disposal of an old shutter is included when we quote for a replacement.

Can you fit outside trading hours?

Yes, out-of-hours fitting can be arranged for shops and businesses that cannot close during the day.
