How fire shutters work, and what to ask for

Fire shutters are tested as complete assemblies, and their fire resistance is quoted in minutes for integrity and, where needed, insulation. Counter-height fire shutters protect serving hatches and kitchen pass-throughs.

Product certification and test evidence come from the manufacturer, and we provide the documentation with the shutter. Escape routes and the effect of the shutter closing are checked against the fire strategy before ordering.

Features to choose from

  • Fire resistance from 60 to 240 minutes, product dependent
  • Manufacturer's test evidence and certification
  • Planned servicing to keep it compliant
  • Alarm-linked closing with fusible link backup
  • Governed closing speed for safety
  • Commissioning and drop test on handover

Rules in England

Fire safety law and fire shutters

In England fire shutters form part of a building's fire precautions under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The responsible person must keep them maintained in efficient working order and good repair, which in practice means regular drop testing with written records.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the opening

Send the postcode, a rough size and a photo if you have one, using the form or a call.

  2. Free survey

We measure, check the structure, power supply and planning position, and talk through options.

  3. Written fixed price

You get a written quote with the product, finish, controls and price before anything is ordered.

  4. Made, fitted and handed over

The shutter is made to measure, fitted, commissioned and handed over with its documents.

Your questions answered

Do you cover Scarborough?

Yes. Send the postcode and we will arrange a survey in Scarborough. We also cover nearby Bridlington.

How often should a fire shutter be tested?

Fire shutters are part of a building's fire precautions, so they must be kept in working order. Manufacturers and industry guidance typically call for a drop test and service at least once a year, and more often where they are used heavily.

Do you certify fire shutters?

The fire rating belongs to the manufacturer's tested product. We supply certified shutters with their documentation and install them to the manufacturer's instructions.

What rating do I need?

The rating must match the fire-resisting wall the shutter is in, which is set by the building's fire strategy or fire risk assessment. We work from that, or from your fire engineer's specification.

How long does it take from order to fitting?

Shutters are made to measure after the survey, so the lead time depends on the product, colour and any security rating. We confirm it in your quote.

What warranty do I get?

Products carry the manufacturer's warranty, and the warranty for your shutter is set out in your quote.
