How industrial roller shutter doors work, and what to ask for

Direct-drive motors mounted on the end plate are typical on large doors because they handle heavy curtains and frequent cycles. Planned maintenance keeps busy doors running and is part of keeping workplace equipment safe.

Insulated laths reduce heat loss at loading bays and help temperature-controlled stock. Three-phase motors are common on larger doors, and the electrical supply is checked at survey.

Specification options

  • Galvanised steel or insulated laths
  • Safety edges, photocells and light curtains
  • Guide guards and bollards against impact
  • Direct-drive and chain motors for heavy use
  • Single or three-phase drives
  • Push-button, pull-cord, loop or remote control

Rules in England

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

How it works

  1. Send the details

Give us the postcode, approximate width and height, and what the shutter is protecting.

  2. We survey the opening

An engineer measures and checks the fixings, power and any planning constraints.

  3. You approve a fixed price

The quote lists the specification and price in writing, so there are no surprises.

  4. We fit and commission

Your shutter is installed, tested and handed over with instructions and paperwork.

Before you book in New Malden

Do you cover New Malden?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair industrial roller shutter doors in New Malden and the KT3 district, as part of our coverage across Greater London.

Can you fit a door with a pedestrian door in it?

Yes. Wicket doors can be built into many industrial shutters, although they need interlocks so the curtain cannot move while the wicket is open.

What safety devices are required?

It depends on the risk assessment. Doors that close automatically or where people and vehicles pass usually need a safety edge, photocells or a light curtain, and force testing on commissioning.

How often should an industrial door be serviced?

Busy doors are usually serviced at least once or twice a year, and more often where they cycle many times a day. The manufacturer's instructions and your risk assessment set the frequency.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Photos and approximate sizes let us give you a guide price quickly. A survey is still needed before a shutter is made, because it is built to exact measurements.

Will you take away my old shutter?

Yes. Removal and disposal of an old shutter is included when we quote for a replacement.
