Roller garage door or up-and-over door?
How roller garage doors compare with up-and-over doors on space, insulation, security, safety and cost.
An up-and-over door swings out and up on a frame, so you cannot park close to it. A roller door rolls vertically into a box above the opening, so it takes no driveway space and leaves the garage ceiling free.

Which is better insulated?
Most roller garage doors use foam-filled aluminium laths, which insulate better than a single steel up-and-over panel. That helps garages used as workshops, gyms or utility rooms.
What about safety?
Electric roller doors should stop and reverse on contact using a safety edge or obstacle detection, and have a manual override. These features matter where children and pets are around.
What does a roller garage door cost?
An electric single roller garage door typically costs £900 to £2,000 fitted, ex VAT, depending on size, insulation and finish. Double garages cost more.
- Roller: no swing-out, better insulation, remote control as standard
- Up-and-over: lower cost, simpler mechanism, needs driveway clearance
