How roller grilles work, and what to ask for

An open curtain lets air and light through, so displays stay on view and the unit does not look closed down. Wide grilles use intermediate posts or a stronger curtain to resist being pushed in.

Shopping centres often require roller grilles rather than solid shutters on unit fronts. A clear-anodised or powder-coated finish keeps a grille looking smart.

Specification options

  • Removable intermediate posts for wide units
  • Solid kick panel option
  • Anodised or powder-coated finishes

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Your questions answered

Do you cover St Austell?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair roller grilles in St Austell and the PL25 district, as part of our coverage across Cornwall.

Is a roller grille or a perforated shutter better?

A grille gives far more visibility and airflow, while a perforated shutter gives more privacy and weather protection. Shopping centres often specify grilles; high streets use both.

Can things be passed through a grille?

Small items can pass through an open lattice. Polycarbonate infill panels close the gaps if that is a concern.

Do roller grilles need planning permission?

External roller grilles usually need planning permission like other external security. Councils often find them more acceptable than solid shutters.

Are your prices fixed?

Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.

Do you repair shutters fitted by other companies?

Yes. We repair and service most makes of roller shutter, grille and industrial door, whoever fitted them.
