How roller grilles work, and what to ask for

Roller grilles roll into a box like a shutter, and can be manual or electric. Wide grilles use intermediate posts or a stronger curtain to resist being pushed in.

Brick-bond, tubular and link patterns give different levels of visibility and strength. Aluminium grilles are lighter and suit large unit fronts; steel grilles add strength.

Features to choose from

  • Optional polycarbonate infill
  • Brick-bond, tubular or link lattice
  • Suited to shopping centre unit fronts
  • Removable intermediate posts for wide units

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Before you book in Ashford (Kent)

Do you cover Ashford (Kent)?

Yes. Ashford (Kent) (TN24) is within our Kent coverage, along with nearby Faversham, Canterbury and Folkestone.

Can a grille cover a very wide unit?

Yes, with a stronger curtain or removable intermediate posts to keep it rigid.

Is a roller grille or a perforated shutter better?

A grille gives far more visibility and airflow, while a perforated shutter gives more privacy and weather protection. Shopping centres often specify grilles; high streets use both.

Can things be passed through a grille?

Small items can pass through an open lattice. Polycarbonate infill panels close the gaps if that is a concern.

Do you work with landlords and managing agents?

Yes. We quote, fit and service shutters for landlords, managing agents and facilities teams, including multi-site planned maintenance.

Are your prices fixed?

Yes. After the survey you get a written price for the agreed specification, confirmed before anything is ordered or any work starts. If you change the specification, or a hidden problem such as a weak lintel is found during fitting, we price it and agree it with you before carrying on.
