Shop front shutters in Bicester: the essentials

Takeaways and late-opening shops often choose quieter aluminium curtains to reduce noise for neighbours above. Internal shutters behind the glazing protect stock without changing the street view, though they leave the glass exposed.

Key switch operation means the shutter can only be opened by a key holder standing at the frontage. Councils generally treat an external shopfront shutter as development that needs planning permission, so the design is chosen with that in mind.

Options we can specify

  • Solid, perforated, punched or open-grille curtains
  • Separate door and window shutters if needed
  • Designs chosen around local planning guidance
  • Anti-lift and bottom-rail locks
  • Box external, behind the fascia or internal
  • Key switch and remote operation

Rules in England

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

Shop front shutters: common questions

Do you cover Bicester?

Yes. We survey, fit and repair shop front shutters in Bicester and the OX26 district, as part of our coverage across Oxfordshire.

Can the shutter match my shopfront colour?

Yes. Shutters can be powder coated to a RAL colour, and the box and guides can be finished to match.

Do I need planning permission for a shop shutter?

In most cases yes. External shutters change the appearance of a shopfront, so councils usually require planning permission, and listed buildings also need listed building consent. Internal shutters often do not need planning permission but may still need consent on a listed building.

Which shutter is most likely to get planning approval?

Councils commonly prefer internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs, and boxes hidden behind the fascia. Solid external shutters are often refused in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Will you take away my old shutter?

Yes. Removal and disposal of an old shutter is included when we quote for a replacement.

What details help you quote quickly?

The postcode, the approximate width and height of the opening, whether you want manual or electric operation, and a photo of the frontage.
