How shutter motor replacement works, and what to ask for

A failed motor on an otherwise sound shutter is usually far cheaper to replace than the whole shutter. We fit motors to most makes of shutter and door. Key switches, wall switches, receivers and remotes can be replaced or upgraded at the same visit.

Motors are matched to the curtain weight and barrel size, so an overloaded motor does not fail early. Smart and timer controls can be added when the motor is replaced.

The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Electrical work

Electric shutters are wired to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. In homes in England, new circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so the work is done by a registered electrician who can self-certify it, or notified to building control.

How do I know if the motor has failed?

Signs include humming without movement, stopping at random, overheating or not responding at all. The fault can also be the switch, receiver or power, so an engineer checks those first.

Can I add remote control when the motor is replaced?

Yes, many replacement motors and controllers support remotes, timers or app control.

How long does it take from order to fitting?
