How steel roller shutters work, and what to ask for

Deep steel guide rails and wind locks keep wide steel curtains in place in high winds. Steel shutters can be insulated with a double-skin lath where heat loss through the opening matters.

Galvanised finishes are practical but plain, so many shopfronts choose a powder-coated colour. Galvanised steel laths are zinc coated to protect against rust, and can be powder coated on top.

Features to choose from

  • Deep guide rails and wind locks for wide openings
  • Insulated steel options
  • Stronger motors, springs and gearboxes
  • Powder coating available over galvanising
  • Bottom-rail locks and anti-lift
  • Manual, crank or electric operation

Rules in England

Planning permission for shopfront shutters

In England an external shutter on a shopfront is usually treated as development that needs planning permission from the local planning authority, and a listed building also needs listed building consent. Many councils' shopfront design guides favour internal shutters, perforated or open-grille designs and boxes hidden behind the fascia, and some refuse solid external shutters in conservation areas and on main shopping streets.

Questions about steel roller shutters in St Austell

Do you cover St Austell?

Yes. St Austell (PL25) is within our Cornwall coverage, along with nearby Newquay, Falmouth and Redruth.

Is steel more secure than aluminium?

Generally yes. Steel laths are harder to cut and dent, which is why steel is used for industrial and higher-risk premises. For independently tested resistance, look for an LPS 1175 rating.

Can a steel shutter have a door in it?

Yes, industrial steel shutters can include a wicket door so people can enter without raising the whole curtain.

Are steel shutters noisy?

Single-skin steel is noisier than insulated aluminium. If noise matters, insulated double-skin laths and a well-adjusted motor help.

Can you fit outside trading hours?

Yes, out-of-hours fitting can be arranged for shops and businesses that cannot close during the day.

Do you repair shutters fitted by other companies?

Yes. We repair and service most makes of roller shutter, grille and industrial door, whoever fitted them.
