Converting a manual shutter to electric
When a manual roller shutter can be motorised, what is involved, the power supply and what it costs.
Most manual shutters can be motorised if the curtain, barrel and box are in good condition. A badly worn or damaged shutter is better replaced, and an engineer will tell you which at survey.

What does the conversion involve?
A tube motor is fitted into the barrel, usually replacing the spring, and a key switch or remote is installed. A manual override is added for power cuts, and the shutter is commissioned with limits and safety checks.
- Condition check of curtain, barrel and box
- Tube motor sized to the curtain
- Key switch, remote or timer
- Manual override
- Electrical connection and commissioning
Does it need a power supply?
Yes. A fused spur near the shutter box is ideal. If there is no supply, a new circuit is quoted separately and installed by a qualified electrician to BS 7671.
What does it cost?
As a guide, converting a domestic window shutter costs around £300 to £600, a shopfront shutter around £450 to £900 and an industrial door £900 to £2,200, ex VAT.
