How high-speed doors work, and what to ask for

Food, pharmaceutical and cold-store sites use them to keep zones separate. High-speed doors are often fitted inside an insulated roller shutter, which provides security out of hours.

Radar, induction loops and pull cords open the door automatically as traffic approaches. They are designed for very high numbers of cycles a day, which a standard roller shutter is not.

Specification options

  • Internal, external and cold-store versions
  • Self-repairing curtain on many models
  • Pairs with a roller shutter for security
  • Light curtain safety protection
  • Vision strips for safe traffic flow
  • Fast-acting PVC fabric curtain

Rules in England

Safety of powered shutters

Powered doors and shutters are treated as machinery. The installer commissions them with a risk assessment, safety devices where the risk calls for them and force checks to BS EN 12453, then hands over a declaration of conformity and maintenance instructions. In workplaces, the employer or whoever controls the premises must keep doors maintained and safe for staff and visitors.

Your questions answered

Do you cover Northampton?

Yes. Northampton (NN1) is within our Northamptonshire coverage, along with nearby Wellingborough, Daventry and Rushden.

What happens if a forklift hits the curtain?

On many models the curtain pops out of its guides and re-feeds itself on the next cycle, which avoids the damage a steel shutter would suffer.

Is a high-speed door secure?

Not on its own. The fabric curtain is for traffic and environmental control, so it is often paired with a roller shutter that closes out of hours.

Do high-speed doors save energy?

They reduce the time an opening stands open, which cuts heat loss and draughts on busy doors.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Photos and approximate sizes let us give you a guide price quickly. A survey is still needed before a shutter is made, because it is built to exact measurements.

How long does it take from order to fitting?

Shutters are made to measure after the survey, so the lead time depends on the product, colour and any security rating. We confirm it in your quote.
